Amanda compared to Exorcist devil-child

Posted on 23:49 by ranjeet
Amanda BynesPeople living in the same building as the troubled actress in New York City have drawn comparisons between her and Linda's role as a devil-possessed child in the 1973 horror film, claiming she often looks "completely out of it" and talks to herself.

One neighbour told the New York Post newspaper: "She stares you out in the elevator. Residents are terrified to be alone with her. She knocked on one woman's door, and when it opened, she screamed 'You're ugly,' and ran away. Amanda always seems to be alone, muttering to herself and looking completely out of it."

However, the 27-year-old star reportedly hasn't been spotted in her apartment building since she was arrested last week, for which she was later charged with attempted evidence tampering, reckless endangerment and marijuana possession.

The source added: "The day before her arrest, she arrived in a cab and ran upstairs, leaving the driver shrieking that she owed him $150. She left her cellphone in the cab. The good news is, she hasn't been seen in the building since the arrest."

Amanda's lawyer, Lee Hutton, has played down claims of her antics, insisting they have been exaggerated.

He explained: "Amanda's fine. This has all been blown out of proportion."

Who's the next queen bee

Posted on 23:47 by ranjeet
Collage of B-town actors
Bollywood is always on a lookout for fresh faces and new talent. The burden of elevating the glam quotient of our films lies on the shoulders of the leading ladies, which makes it important for filmmakers to launch new female leads every other Friday.

The current lot of top heroines - Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Vidya Balan - is gradually getting choosy. Most of them have been around for a decade or close to a decade and they know overexposure could spell doom in an industry where heroines have a short shelf life.

That is where the new hot lot comes in. Sonakshi Sinha, Parineeti Chopra, Alia Bhatt, Jacqueline Fernandes, Richa Chaddha, Nargis Fakhri and Huma Qureshi are making their way to the top. Each of these girls is trying to carve a niche with a distinct image.

Most of these actresses have signed at least two to three films with prominent banners.

It is also interesting to note that each of these actresses is trying to experiment with roles and trying out newer scripts in order to acquire a USP. Bollywood has always been a male dominated bastion where nearing - 50 heroes constantly look for heroines half their age to keep up a youthful image. That is where a makeover in the heroines̢۪ roster becomes essential every few years. Filmmakers seem to be in the mood for a glamour overhaul for heroines at this point.

"Bollywood is driven by the male lead actor and the overall freshness quotient of a film depends on its actress. This is the reason every hero and filmmaker wants to change the heroine in each of their new film," says trade analyst Taran Adarsh.

"The success ratio is a very important factor for new generation actresses to enter the top league. Although the business of films is dominated by the men, actresses are largely judged on the basis of their last hit. Compatibility with the lead actor is another factor that adds to a heroine̢۪s profile besides her beauty and talent," adds Adarsh.
Each new girl is trying to carve a niche with a distinct image. Most of them have at least two to three big films in hand. We take a look at the new breed of actresses who are slowly and steadily making a mark and gunning for the top slot.

Jacqueline Fernandez
Wannabe Katrina Kaif with her own charm
She will be seen in Sajid Nadiadwala's Kick starring Salman Khan.

Ex- Miss Sri Lanka Jacqueline has wholly banked on the exotic glamour quotient that made Katrina Kaif a superstar. It has worked for her so far, considering she has already done six films in four years. Sajid Nadiadwala's Kick starring Salman Khan and Vicky Singh's Roy opposite Ranbir Kapoor.

What Works: Race 2 proved she can up the glam quotient sufficiently to steal the thunder even in a multi-starrer. The fact that Salman Khan gave his nod to cast her in his next film, Kick, also works positively for her.

What goes against: So far, she has been just another version of Katrina Kaif who has ruled the roost for a decade now. Jacqueline needs to give the foreign import image a twist if she wants to survive.

Nargis Fakhri
Latest Whiff of Exotic Oomph.
She will be seen in Shoojit Sirkar's Madras Cafe starring John Abraham.

Nargis aims to get into the foreign - import bracket that became hot after Katrina Kaif.

Coming up: Shoojit Sirkar's Madras Cafe starring John Abraham, David Dhawan's Tu Mera Hero with Varun Dhawan and Rumi Jaffery's Shaukeen remake opposite Akshay Kumar. She has a three- film deal with Akshay's banner.

What works: The Half- Pakistani, half- Czech ex- model is relatively a fresh face and that should work for her.

What goes against: She is already 33 years old, not a great age to start off as a glam girl in an industry that constantly searches for new PYTs. Also, she needs to do something about her deadpan expressions that we saw in her debut film. Rockstar .

Parineeti Chopra
Versatile youngster with screen presence

Parineeti impressed with a relatively small role in her debut film, Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl before winning a special National Award for her second film, Ishaqzaade .

She will be seen in Shaad Ali's Kill Dil opposite Ranveer Singh.
Coming up
: Shaad Ali's Kill Dil opposite Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar's Hasee Toh Phasee opposite Siddharth Malhotra, Manish Sharma's next.

What works: With just two films, she has proved she is a skilled actress. She is wisely staying out of the glamour race and is positioning herself as a new- age mix of Vidya Balan and cousin Priyanka Chopra.

What goes against: She lacks the glamour of her star cousin Priyanka. In Bollywood, as we have seen in the case of Konkona Sen Sharma or Mahie Gill, simply banking on acting skills never lets you thrive.

Parineeti needs to take a few glamour tips from Priyanka.
Huma Qureshi
Huma instantly became talk of the town with her raw appeal and unconventional look when she made her debut in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs Wasseypur , where she played small town Muslim girl Mohsina.

She will be seen in Nikhil Advani's D- Day.
Coming up: Nikhil Advani's D- Day and Vishal Bhardwaj's Dedh Ishqiya . Michael Winterbottom's Trishna yet to release in India.

What works: Huma has emerged as the quintessential sex symbol of cerebral cinema, oozing effortless sensuality in Anurag Kashyap's Gangs Of Wasseypur . Her unusual attractiveness was tapped in her role of Mohsina, even as she appeared in gaudy outfits as against the designer wear mostly donned by her rivals.

What goes against:
Huma's best has been seen so far only in Anurag Kashyap films. She needs to explore good options with other filmmakers to avoid being tagged as belonging to the Kashyap camp. She also needs to watch her weight to remain in the race.

Alia Bhatt
Each actresses trying experiment roles trying scripts order acquire has been male dominated bastion nearing- constantly heroines keep is heroines' essential Filmmakers for Alia emerged as the child-woman of Bollywood. Her chirpy, stylish role in Student Of The Year came as a whiff fresh air in B- town and the actress instantly got attention of an accomplished filmmaker like Imtiaz Ali who cast her in Highway .

Alia Bhatt will be seen in Imtiaz Ali's Highway opposite Randeep Hooda.
Coming up:
Imtiaz Ali's Highway opposite Randeep Hooda and the Karan Joharproduced 2 States opposite Arjun Kapoor.

What works: Alia became an overnight youth sensation because she presented a perfect blend of innocence and chic in her debut role as rich brat Shanaya in Student Of The Year . The raw appeal is being tapped by Imtiaz Ali while Alia is trying to give a spin to her image by playing a Tamil beauty in 2 States opposite Arjun Kapoor, based on Chetan Bhagat̢۪s best seller.

What goes against: With her baby face and westernised image, Alia could easily get typecast. She will have to focus on mature roles at the same time because the candyfloss roles will dry out with advancing age. To establish herself as a complete package, she will have to carefully pick roles that are different from her image.

Sonakshi Sinha
Desi Diva image with the right bloodline
Sonakshi Sinha will be seen in Vikramaditya's Motwane 's Lootera.

Sonakshi's traditional image has worked in her favour. Being a star daughter, she got a smooth entry into films as also the support coming from salman Khan & Akshay Kumar. Back-to-back hits have established her as a saleable star .

Coming up: Vikramaditya's Motwane 's Lootera, Milan Luthria's  Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again, Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullet Raja , Prabhudeva's Rambo Rajkumar, besides Pistol and Welcome 2.

What works: Being the traditional actress has become a USP in an era when every other budding actress is trying to acquire an ultra-modern westernized image. Most of her upcoming films cast her in an indian image that has worked for her so far. She has also revealed a promising range as an actress till now.

What goes against: Sonakshi's disastrous item dance Thank God, It's Friday in Himmatwala showed her inability to be to be uber glamourous which, if you want to be a superstar heroine, is very much needed to Bollywood . She could get typecast with a traditional image after a while

Thumbs down' to B'wood films showing tobacco use

Posted on 23:47 by ranjeet

Nearly 60 per cent of Bollywood films including blockbusters released over the past five months have shown smoking scenes in violation of rules regulating depiction of tobacco use in films, says a study.

Student volunteers from over five schools and four colleges watched 31 movies in the past 5 months to assess tobacco use incidents and compliance with newly notified film-related Indian tobacco control laws.
"Out of the 31 films reviewed so far, only 13 films have received a 'thumbs up' with the remaining 18 films getting a thumbs down! which means nearly 60 per cent of the films haven't complied with the rules regulating depiction of tobacco use in films," says the study.
The review began with blockbuster films like " Jab Tak Hai Jaan", which received a 'Thumbs up!'
The film starring Shahrukh Khan and Katrina Kaif got approval for "adhering to film related laws ... which includes a 20 second audio-visual disclaimer and a 30 second health spot before and in the middle of the film as well as a static health message at the bottom of the screen each time during the period of depiction of tobacco use on-screen," the study observed.
Whereas the Ajay Devgan-Sonakshi Sinha film "Son of Sardar" released in November 2012 received a "thumbs down!" since "there was no anti-tobacco static warning message displayed at the bottom of the screen during the period of depiction of tobacco products. No audio-visual disclaimer shown at the beginning and middle of the movie."
Some of the other films that were monitored include "Talaash", "Dabangg 2", "Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola" among others.
The study is based on results of on a ongoing monitoring campaign "Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down" by the NGO HRIDAY (Health Related Information Dissemination Amongst Youth) in technical collaboration with the University of California.
"Despite the regulations, tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship is very rampant and youth centric. According to a recent study by us, the current use of tobacco was five times higher in students who were highly receptive to tobacco advertising than those who were least receptive," says Monika Arora, senior director, HRIDAY.
"Surrogate advertising, brand extension and brand promotion by tobacco companies are areas of key concerns which need to be regulated to effectively implement a complete ban on TAPS," she says.

A government notification, which came into effect from October 2, 2012 laid down rules on how to depict smoking scenes in films and television serials in accordance with the Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003. The theme of the World No Tobacco Day 2013, which falls on May 31 is 'Ban Tobacco Advertising, Promotion and Sponsorship' (TAPS).
The "Thumbs Up and Thumbs down" campaign, supported by World Health Organisation- Regional Office for South-East Asia, involves inculcating critical watching and advocacy skills among youth by engaging them as film reviewers.

The youth have been sensitized to count the number of incidents and assess other related aspects while watching the film, in accordance with a comprehensive review protocol.

Scoring for the campaign has been based on - Number of incidents of tobacco use on-screen, the viewers' perception about tobacco use on-screen and compliance with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's newly notified rules on depiction of tobacco use in films.

According to the Global Youth Tobacco Survey 2009-10, nearly 15 per cent youth currently use tobacco in India.

"Many teenagers light their first cigarette after watching their favourite actor smoke on screen!" according to an official from HRIDAY.

Recently, school children associated with HRIDAY's programme wrote to Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor urging her to forgo depiction of tobacco use in her film " Heroine".

"The makers of the film responded by lending her voice to a recorded warning at the beginning of the film," said the spokesperson of the NGO

The Lunchbox: Ritesh Batra’s think local, act global strategy

Posted on 23:45 by ranjeet
That seems to be the mantra of Ritesh Batra, whose debut feature won India an award at Cannes after 14 years

Ritesh Batra's debut feature film The Lunchbox won the Viewers' Choice Award in the Critics' Week segment at the recently concluded Cannes International Film Festival, making it the first Indian film in 14 years to bag a trophy at the prestigious event.

The film starring Irrfan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nimrat Kaur, is a surprisingly simple story of how a wrongly delivered lunchbox becomes the mode of communication between two strangers and brings them closer.

The film has already been sold in 20 territories across the globe, and Sony Pictures Classics has recently bought the North American rights. Batra hopes that the success of the film will allow the independent filmmakers of the country to tell more stories that are 'rooted and honest'.

According to him, it is the quintessential Indian flavour that is drawing international audience to his Lunchbox. "I am glad people have found something universal in a story essentially rooted in Indian milieu. Although everyone brings themselves to the movies and finds their own way into it, I think the more local we are, the more universal we will be," he says.

The film, an Indo-French-German co-production, is one of the biggest collaborations the genre has seen in recent years, and Batra explains: "From both a creative and business stand point; I think this film was ideal for a co-production. I got a chance to work with an American editor and DoP, a German sound designer and composer, and a French colourist. The co-production made these collaborations possible. From a business standpoint, foreign partners put in effort to make the film work in their markets because they have invested in the film."

According to him, the collaborations also became a way to test the film on a diverse group of people and mould it to give it a universal resonance. However, such a collaboration might not work for every film. "I don't know who the collaborators will be until I finish writing the story. It's always tough and lonely to confront a blank page," he says.

The film is supposed to hit the theatres next year, after its release in the US

Ritu da left a void in the world of progressive work: Amitabh Bachchan

Posted on 23:44 by ranjeet
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who worked with maverick filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh in his first English language film 'The Last Lear', said his death has left a huge void in the world of progressive cinema.
The 12-time National Award-winning filmmaker died of cardiac arrest yesterday at his south Kolkata residence.
Bachchan, 70, took to his blog to express his 'shock' on the sudden demise of the 49-year-old Bengali filmmaker.

Ritu da left a void in the world of progressive work: Big BAmitabh Bachchan took to his blog to express his \'shock\' on the sudden demise of Rituparno Ghosh.
"Rituparno Ghosh, that young and most respected director from Bengal, passed away this morning. Suddenly, and most unexpectedly! It has been extremely shocking for all of us and indeed the entire film fraternity, at this most rude
and unbelievable news. 49 years is no age to die, but Ritu Da as we affectionately called him has gone, and left a huge void in the world of some of the most progressive work done in recent times," Bachchan posted on his blog.
'The Last Lear' is the story of a fading Shakespearean stage artist, who lived in seclusion in his old age until he is approached by a filmmaker to act in his film.
Bachchan remembers how the whole unit used to speak in Bengali during the shoot and at the end of the day Ghosh used to call up Jaya Bachchan to laugh on the wrong pronunciations he made.
"The unit spoke in Bengali, which was a joy, for it gave us all an opportunity to pick up the second most sweetest language in the world. The first being French. At the end of a days work he would call Jaya and share a laugh at all the wrong pronunciations that I was making in my Bengali," he added.
The 'Sholay' star also said that the filmmaker was a delight to work with.
"But he was essentially a delight to work with. Challenging, gently pushing for a correction, giving immense liberty to the actor on set without any interference, and readily accommodating any peculiar demands that most actors often tend to make when they are facing the camera," he said.
Bachchan also revealed that Ghosh had called him few weeks ago to discuss a script with him.
"I had wished him on his birthday some months back. He had wished Jaya on hers last month and they spoke of doing a film together, as did he with me too some weeks ago, of a story he was constructing for us to work together in," Bachchan said

Apple iPhone sales up 400% in India thanks to EMI scheme: Report

Posted on 23:42 by ranjeet
Apple’s iPhone sales in India are nearing 400,000 units per month, registering an increase on 300% to 400% over the last few months, according to Economic Times who has an access to Credit Suisse's research analyst Sunil Tirumalai’s note to clients. This has been possible due to Equal monthly installments (EMI) and cash back schemes.

Before the Apple introduced the EMI schemes four months back, the iphone sales were hovering around 70,000-80,000 per month. "From our channel checks we believe that iPhone sales are nearing 400,000 units per month in India - that is nearly 3% share of handset sales for a single top-end product in a market that has long been dominated by low-end feature phones," said Sunil Tirumalai.

Given the fact that in India which is the world's second most-populous nation after China with a huge handset market and that majority of people do not go for the high-end phones, Apple’s achievement is really remarkable.
"The 4-9% implicit discount coupled with the option of easy EMIs spread over 6-12 months became popular," Tirumalai said. "Within a few months, our discussions with handset retailers indicated that iPhone sales went up 3-4x, forcing companies to respond."

Rituparno Ghosh’s special bond with Aishwarya Rai and Bachchans

Posted on 09:24 by ranjeet
In pics: Rituparno Ghosh’s special bond with Aishwarya Rai and Bachchans A director with a deep understanding of women’s psyche, Rituparno Ghosh directed Aishwarya Rai first in the Bengali movie Chokher Bali and then in the Hindi movie Raincoat. During the making of these films, Ghosh came to know and understand Aishwarya, so much so that he wrote a very personal note to her (we reveal the note in the coming slides) in which he described her as a “spontaneous, warm, genuine and caring person”.

Aishwarya Rai too felt a strong bond towards him and reached out to him in his hour of grief, as Rituparno Ghosh himself admitted. Naturally, she’s shocked and saddened by Ghosh’s untimely death at the age of just 49. The filmmaker was suffering from pancreatitis. He passed away at his South Kolkata residence in sleep around 7.30 a.m. on Thursday following a massive cardiac arrest.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by this news. I just can't believe it. May his soul rest in peace,” Aishwarya Rai said in a statement.

Abhishek Bachchan too expressed his shock and also pointed out that Rituparno Ghosh was the only filmmaker to have directed each one in the Bachchan family separately.

“Just realised that Ritu da was the only director that my family have all worked with individually. Pa- The Last Lear, Ma- Sunglasses…Aishwarya - Chokher Bali, Raincoat and me- Antarmahal,” Abhishek Bachchan tweeted.

Ahead, ApunKaChoice brings you some candid moments of Rituparno Ghosh with the Bachchans. Don’t miss

In Pics: Mumbai Indians have a blast at Nita Ambani's IPL title bash
Giving an apt farewell to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, after Mumbai Indians clinched their maiden coveted IPL trophy, team owner Nita Ambani threw a celebration party to all the players in Mumbai on Wednesday.

While the players from Ricky Ponting, Harbhajan Singh to Sachin Tendulkar bathed in champagne, it was Nita Ambani’s son Anant Ambani and Sachin Tendulkar’s daughter Sara who stole the show.

Resembling her mother in black, Sara looked every inch a diva. The young Tendulkar in the making, Sachin’s son Arjun was also around to celebrate the win with the players and of course his master blaster father.

Heavyweight Akash Ambani filled in for his father’s absence to give company to mom Nita. Also in presence were composer Anu Malik, Kapil Sibal and Prasoon Joshi.

Playing their second final, Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians had denied Chennai Super Kings their third title, pummeling then by 23 runs at the jam-packed Eden Gardens

Aamir Khan irritates Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan

Dhoom 3: Aamir Khan irritates Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan
Every actor in Bollywood wants to work with Aamir Khan as his presence in a film is guarantee of a blockbuster. But it seems like the co-stars of Aamir’s upcoming film Dhoom 3 are not too happy in his company. As per a leading website, Katrina Kaif and Abhishek Bachchan are getting frustrated with the way Aamir works.

A source close to production team of Dhoom 3 told to the website, “The film is taking longer than expected, courtesy the Talaash actor. Kat and Abhi are fed-up because unlike him, they don’t do one film in a year and their other commitments are suffering because of the delay in D3. Also, Aamir has become late lateef lately, which is complicating matters. Not that his co-stars will complain openly. Because they understand that his inputs are for the betterment of the film, but they can’t help feeling frustrated.”

The source added, “Katrina and Abhishek have been on the verge of tearing their hair out. In fact, things have come to such a point that Katrina has told people around her that she will think hard before working with Aamir again. Her Bang Bang schedule had to be postoponed twice because of D3. Earlier, Aamir would always come for a 9am shot sharp on time or maybe even earlier. But now he strolls in at 1pm and sometimes even 2pm. He refuses to shoot beyond eight hours as he says he can’t focus beyond that. Often due to lighting or other technical conditions, shots get delayed but he is adamant about sticking to his eight-hour shift.”

But we are sure that Mr Perfectionist Dhoom 3 will deliver another masterpiece. Click to see pictures from the sets of Dhoom 3

Bollywood reacts to Mallika Sherawat's 'anti-India' remarks

Posted on 08:56 by ranjeet
Mallika SherawatIt is said that we do not see the world as it is, but as we are. While there are pockets of India that are way more regressive than even Afghanistan, there is another India that is way more progressive than Europe or America. India is too complex a nation to be reduced to a blurb. At the same time it is also a nation that permits everyone to have an opinion, no matter how banal or profound.

Divya Dutta
Wonder why she said what she did! Isn’t she undermining all the Indian women achievers who’ve been given great opportunities by this country? She got her fame here. Women in this country are on par with their sisters in any part of the world.

Raakhee Gulzar
Poor thing. She tried every trick, yet made no impact. If she says we’re regressive then she must leave, find herself a more suitable place of her choice. Maybe a nudist’s colony?

Amrita Puri
The context in which Mallika spoke was ridiculous. She made it sound like she is the only progressive actor in this country. It’s a shame that she was given a platform where she presented such a false and unintelligent point of view.

Shibani Kashyap
She shouldn’t be talking against India. It shows her lack of empathy with her roots and an absence of loyalty to the country that has given her name, fame and stardom. Rather than bitching about India why doesn’t she work towards the safety of women here?

Tapsee Pannu
I don’t want to waste my time and energy commenting on the comments of such people.

Tannishta Chatterjee
The status of women is no different in other countries. The expressions and manifestations are different. The cosmetic pressure on women comes from the West. In the US, being a woman president was made into such a  big deal.

Dia Mirza
Honestly, I believe India is a paradox and for many women in our country the benefits of progressive thought, equal opportunities and a level playing-field are denied.

There have been times when I’ve been deeply disturbed about many issues that trouble women in India. Having said that, I think it’s unfair to make a sweeping statement that encompasses all women. Such a rash generalisation undermines the very voices that strive to make India a better place for women.Instead of being pessimistic we should all make a conscious effort to strengthen those voices thereby further empowering women.”

Richa Chadha
I saw her interview and found it typical of a Colonial prejudice, replete with a gora accent and all. Yes, India has regressive elements that results in rapes, female foeticides and a gender bias. But India is also a country where women choose to wear and say what they want. It has Indira Gandhi, Indra Nooyi and Medha Patkar. And yes, we also have space for Mallika Sherawat. It is uncool for an Indian woman to go abroad  and speak ill of our country.

Dolly Ahluwalia
If she feels so strong against this country, why has she tolerated India for so long? She is forgetting her identity as a woman is due to this country. I am proud to be an Indian woman and to represent my country at international forums.

Khusbhoo
As a woman and a proud citizen of my country I find her statements very harsh. Her comments project my India in a very bad light to the outside world. We do have our flaws. But which country doesn’t? A child was flushed down a toilet in China this week.

Could society get any more regressive than that? Mallika is an Indian. She has the freedom to speak her mind. That shows how progressive we are

Eid big enough for two films: Akshay Kumar

Posted on 07:59 by ranjeet
Akshay KumarBollywood actor Akshay Kumar said the festival of Eid was big enough to accommodate two films, SRK's Chennai Express and his Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai Again.

"I see this in a positive way. Eid is a big day. It is big enough for two films. There is no point in thinking too much over it," Akshay said at the first look of the film held Wednesday. Eid falls in August.

The actor was accompanied by the star cast of the film, Imran Khan, Sonakshi Sinha and director Milan Lutheria.

Akshay will be seen taking the character forward which was originally played by Emraan Hashmi in the prequel. Talking about this, he said that there was no benchmark which he was trying to cross.

"I am just playing my role. I havn't thought of it as a benchmark. I just listened to my director. I never thought that I had to cross any benchmark," he said.
